Class Descriptions

Thank you to all who participated in our 2004 Classes. We have moved to Northern Michigan and will be conducting classes next spring and summer. Check back in April for classes in the Northern Michigan area.

Class: Quick Start
Time: Weekends: 9 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Cost: $55 includes kayak, paddle, spray skirt, PFD
Prerequisites: Willingness to try new things, comfortable in water environment
Course Description: This 3 hour class is designed to equip first time paddlers and those first time purchasers for the skills they will need for a safe and fun on-water paddling experience. This class will introduce participants to equipment they will need, where to paddle, local paddling club information and networking to meet other paddlers. Each participant will receive a folder with handouts on: Basic Kayak Buying Tips, Paddle and Kayak Terminology, Kayak Features, Safety Equipment, plus information on local paddling opportunities, clubs, and kayak rentals. We will spend time both on Kayak Class Graphicland and in kayaks so participants may get wet. Participants will be introduced to the basics of getting into and out of a kayak, the "efficient forward and reverse" propulsion strokes along with sweep strokes necessary to steer and turn a kayak. After a brief introduction to the sea kayak and the associated equipment, participants will review the strokes introduced during the on land segment then go for a paddle where they can practice the skills and have fun paddling a sea kayak. While this is meant to be a "dry" class be sure to wear proper clothes in case of an accidental capsize.

Class: Introduction to Sea kayaking
Time: 9am - 4:30 pm
Cost: $90 includes kayak, paddle, spray skirt, PFD
Prerequisites: Willingness to try new things, comfortable in a water environment
Course Description: This full day class offers the basics from the Quick Start class (see above) but continues on with more instruction in stroke technique, hazard identification and rescue skills. For those looking to safely venture out on an inland lake, this class should be the minimum requirement.
